BREAK
OF DAWN BY CANDACE SACKEY
Like Chinua Achebe’s
Things Fall Apart, Break of Dawn tells a story of how African culture mixes
with American culture and the confrontation that ensues. It is the pursuit of
the Merican dream by a typical African girl, Mukea, who was trained in an
African Village called Nemaako.
The story deals with
the way Mukea handles her new life and her interactions with the people she
met.
ADAMA:
THE CHILD BRIDE BY NAOMI ADJEI, MATILDA AGYAPONG, EUGENIA AGYAPONG
Adama the Bride Child
is a carefully knit story of a budding young girl whose dream of becoming a
doctor is nearly snuffed out by early marriage. The authors captivate the
reader with language that is simple but powerful in the imagery that wells up
in the reader’s mind. The happy ending with the intervention of Dr. Fatimat and
CSLN is very important as many a story of this kind, leaves the reader with
only a tragic ending. This is a story of pain but also one of hope, as Adama is
given the chance to continue her education. Both children and adults will find
reading this book a useful hobby activity but also an instructional tool for
building their capacity to speak out and take action against child marriage in
Nigeria.
SHATTERED
DREAMS BY AANIA L.S. SEADE
Rose and Susan were
very close friends. They attended the same school, were in the same class and
did everything in common. One thing kept close. Both of them took great delight
in following rich old men and slept with them expressly for money.
While Susan’s parents
were against their habit of going after old men who could be their fathers,
Rose’s mother encouraged her daughter in the act. “Use what you have to get
what you want,” Rose’s mother used to tell her. The two girls continued with
their wayward life until the inevitable happened.
NGOZI’S
RED LETTER DAY BY AMANKWAH, MENSAH, NEWMAN AND OBENG-MANU
Abrefi experiences her
menarche – the first occurrence of menstruation. However, she is unprepared for
this experience. Her teacher uses the experience to educate the class on
mensuration.
The story exposes the
unpreparedness of many adolescent girls for this major developmental stage. It
fills the gap where parents, guardians and the school system (teachers and the
curriculum) fail to educate girls and boys on mensurattion and its related
issues. The story serves as a simple guide
to assist parents, guardians, teachers and even adolescents themselves
on the biological process of menstruation, management of the menstrual period,
good hygiene practices, precautions to take and who to speak to when they
experience challenges. It is a good read which encourages girls to freely talk
about mensuration and debunk notions of mensuration as a taboo topic.
